From ultra smooth to highly textured, matte paper can have many kinds of surfaces/finishes.
The surface can give the image a different look. In general, both types are well suited for graphic expressions and create fantastic print results.
Smooth paper is most similar to what you see on the screen, while textured papers can give an analog feel to the subject. Among all paper types, matte plain paper creates the sharpest prints. The overall expression of the image is slightly less contrasty than on glossy paper.
Textured paper is usually matte and comes in different shapes. The texture can be soft, like waves in an ocean, or very rough and sharp like sandpaper. It can be called digital watercolor paper. The texture can hide the blurring of the subject, but remember that prints on these papers are not as sharp as prints on plain paper. When it comes to the expression of the image, the same applies as for matte plain paper.
