Matte plain paper has minimal surface texture and as a group is the sharpest of all paper types. However, there are variations that make a difference in expression. 

Smooth matte paper offers the widest range, from simple quality to high-end. Smooth matte paper is suitable for most things, from portraits to landscapes, to cities, animals and cars, you name it. 

Ultra-smooth matte papers make the print a little softer in expression. They also resemble very old photographs that are matte but almost have a lustre because they are so fine-grained.

The thickness of the paper and the colour tone can also make quite a big difference.
